The photo in this blog post does not show my firs experiences in Tabligh. It was taken in 1994 while on the right was captured in 2007.
It was in 1990 when a 40-day-khuruj Tablighi Jamaa spent for three days in Nurul Islam Masjid, Km 2, Kajatian,
Indanan, Sulu. I was too busy performing continuous substitute teacher in some elementary schools of Jolo IV District and Indanan District. That Tabligh group whose amir (leader) was Ustadz Nawang was coming from Basilan Province. One of my close friends was in the company of the jamaa. He was Faisal "Fai" A. Kadil, my ATTP (Accelerated Teachers' Training Program) classmate in Notre Dame of Jolo College. Almost day and night we were together with Fai even though we were already graduates of NDJC. In the afternoon of that day, he escorted Amirsab visiting my house. Tabligh called that activity kususi. Our dialogue did not take an hour. The jamaa bade goodbye while Fai whispered to me that I should accompany him sleeping in masjid at night. I nodded until he saw me there after Isha Prayer.
Before we entered masjid, I asked Fai to demonstrate the way for making wudu (ablution). Inside of the masjid, there was another tabligh activity, the so-called Hayatus Shahabah. Prof. Amirul Ahajul of Mindanao State University - Sulu read it before the group. I was one of those in front of him listening to what he read all about. While I was looking at the book, I noticed some peculiar things in Kitab while Prof kept on reading the story. It was big Arabic words catching my eyes with full attention and wonders. I showed more humility and respect as I went on listening to the story. I did not tell anybody even Fai about the strange situation that I felt during the activity. It really made me stunned with full of wonders and mystery.
Before the dawn, it was normally a Fazr Prayer. Loud azan woke me up. I immediately ran outside of the mosque following some masjid-goers doing ablution before the faucet. I did not mind my ignorance in all recitations and preparations for standing salah. When obligatory prayer was started by the Imam, I inserted my both feet between two expert salah-doers in the last line at the back. I just mimicked what on my both sides did.
For the three days period of stay in Nurul Islam Masjid, Basilan Jamaa agreed to transfer to Kasulutan Village Masjid, Gandasuli, Patikul, Sulu. I inquired Amirsab if I would be permitted to go with them. He okayed. I frankly told him that I lacked enough knowledge on salah and many other Islamic rituals. Still, he encouraged me more. Alhamdulillah, I stayed with Basilan Tabligh for three days in Kasulutan. Then, Amirsab gave me wafsi hidaya in the morning of Monday before I would be going home for school or reporting to Panglima Indanan Central School, Licup, Indanan, Sulu.
